CANDLE HOLDER DUG UP FROM THE SITE OF THE PETERSBURG MINE EXPLOSION DURING THE BATTLE OF THE CRATER
home-made iron candle holder with pointed tapered end and hook; with vendor's descriptive tag
22.5cm long
OTHER NOTES
Lt. Col. Henry Pleasants of the 48th Penn. Inf. thought of a plan to break the Siege of Petersburg. It was to dig a tunnel more than 500 feet long and set off a massive explosion under the Confederate Battery at Eliot's Salient. The 48th Penn. were coal miners by trade and achieved this in less than one month. When it was completed they laid a charge of 5000 kg of black powder. After the first fuse failed, the charge finally exploded at 3.30am on 30 July, 1864 and created a crater some170 feet long, 60-80 feet wide and 30 feet deep killing 270 Confederate soldiers. However the plan failed terribly as the Confederates quickly regrouped and repelled the attacking Union forces inflicting huge casualties.
