Westcourt won the 1917 Melbourne Cup in a close finish with Lingle.

Bill 'Midge' McLachlan, the great grandfather of trainer Lee Freedman, was the first jockey to ride three Melbourne Cup winners, on Prince Foote (1909), Comedy King (1910) and Westcourt (1917). He was also the first Australian jockey to ride for the British royal family.
