The watercolour in the pearl & gold circular frame is of Barbara Sybil Fremantle, the mother of the current seller. Barbara was the daughter of Admiral Sir Sydney Fremantle, great nephew of Sir Charles Howe Fremantle. On 2 May, 1829, the then Captain Charles Howe Fremantle, took possession of the west coast of Australia shortly before the arrival of the first European settlers arrived in the new colony. The port of Fremantle was named in his memory. It is likely that the artist of this miniature was Barbara's mother, Leila, Lady Sydney Fremantle, who had trained at the Slade School of Art, London, prior to her marriage.
The portrait presents in very good order. The pearls are all in good order and secure in their settings. The glazed panel is in very good order. Gold surface to reverse shows a minor amount of wear. The fitted box is in good order externally. Some internal fabric is threadbare.
