A SCALE MODEL OF A PLUNGER PUMP FROM THE LORD NELSON GOLD MINE, ST ARNAUD, VICTORIA
in turned and forged steel and brass, mounted on an ebonised frame applied with a sterling silver shield inscribed 'Scale Model / of famous / St. Arnaud's / Nelson Mine / Plunger Pump / 1860,' on a pine base, (some components disconnected), 72 x 39 x 25cm; together with a separate brass wheel, 22.5cm diameter

History: the Lord Nelson gold mine was in operation from 1884 to 1915 and was the largest mine to operate in the town of St Arnaud, in the Wimmera region of Victoria. The mine itself can be traced back to C1860 as in 1862 the existing mine became known as The Chrysolite Hill Mine , and later in the early 1880s as The Lord Nelson gold mine. At the peak of its production, the mine produced 640,000 tons of gold, from which 330,000 ounces of gold was extracted, to the value, at the time, of 1million pounds. The mine ultimately closed, due to the expense associated with the pumping of water from the various shafts to the surface. The model pump presented here, is a reciprocating pump which operates on the positive displacement principle, meaning that the internal volume of the pump is constant during both the suction and discharge cycle and enabling it to produce a constant flow, independent of variations in discharge pressure.

The date '1860' inscribed on the model probably refers to the general commencement of mining in the St Arnaud area, which commenced in the early 1860s.
