A CHINESE PAINTING OF A MAIDEN HOLDING A FAN
19TH CENTURY

ink and colour on paper, the demure figure with a gently flushed face, her styled chignon decorated with numerous auspicious items, including elaborate phoenix, crane and butterfly ornaments, she wears bejeweled drop earrings upon her earlobes, and jade bracelets and rings upon her dainty fingers and hands, with elongated nails, as she cools herself with a large circular fan painted with a peony, the 'queen' of flowers, alluding to the maiden's natural beauty. She stands at a window with a bamboo rail, gazing at an unseen landscape, while voyeuristically, the viewer gazes upon her. The roundness of the fan, reflected again in the circular form of the window providing a pleasing overall symmetry; framed
