Lot 156

A FINE CHINESE TRADE PAINTING OF A SEATED LADY
MID 19TH CENTURY

gouache on paper; original rosewood frame (hongmu), the lady painted with a delicate oval face, as considered the 'ideal' of the day, and dressed in light and dark shades of blue silk, as she sits cross-legged on a porcelain stool at a marble topped table. Holding an open book in her right hand, while with the other, she caresses her chin and gazes serenely at the viewer. Various smoking paraphernalia and a tea bowl rests at her elbow. Her jade and gold bracelet, matching rings, and delicate pearl hairpins attest to her high status, as does the two very tiny bound feet clothed in red satin shoes peeking suggestively beyond the swathes of blue silk, 56 x 71cm
