A FINE CHINA TRADE PAINTING OF A LADY
19TH CENTURY

oil on canvas, original rosewood frame, the beautiful young lady finely painted standing in a rocky landscaped garden beside a banana tree, holding a fan in one hand, the other hand holding her foot to emphasize her exotic, tiny bound feet. The banana tree was celebrated in early Chinese poetry for its sound rather than for its shape and colour in capturing the imagination, inspired thoughts of the sound of raindrops falling on them, or the wide leaves rustling in the wind; providing the lady in this painting with a romantic backdrop for nostalgic contemplation.
58 x 43cm (without frame); 68 x 51cm (framed)
