Lot 38

A CHINESE GILT BRONZE AND CLOISONNE ENAMEL FIGURE OF AN ELEPHANT
on a turquoise background, the elephant stands erect on four legs, on a double detachable based tray, upon his saddle, rests a detachable gourd-shaped enamelled vase, with scroll handles, 58cm high x 40cm wide

Catalogue Note: The elephant in China is a symbol of peace, and the combination of an elephant xiang and vase ping refers to 'peaceful times' taiping youxiang. During the Qing dynasty real elephants carrying vases on their backs appeared in processions celebrating the Emperor's birthday. The elephant is also one of the auspicious symbols of Buddhism, representing royalty.
