Lot 660

A POLISHED GREY STONE FIGURE OF VISHNU, NEPAL, 9TH CENTURY
Modelled standing, with all limbs and attributes still attached such as the current work, are very rare. Physically oriented in an anterior posture, standing in equipoise with weight evenly distributed on both feet, or samabhanga, the current work was designed to be viewed and worshipped from the front. With its sensuous modeling and powerful build, this exceptionally fine work is a superb example of heroic Vishnu sculpture, and a testament to the works produced during the 9th Century, mounted on custom made stand, (restoration to nose and lips), 85cm total height

Provenance: Private Australian Collection since the 1980s by repute

Estimate $40,000 - $50,000

Unsold

This item is in fair condition, especially considering its age.

This item was previously an architectural carving, so obviously there are major losses and loss of the figures greater context. The figure is only missing its feet, as the rest of the figure appears to be whole.

As stated in the description there is a minor restoration to the face, localised at the nose and lips. Often these features are damaged, so this reconstruction is to be expected.

The back of the stone has had a clay like material that is begin to flake off. This does not appear to be causing any damage to the underlying stone.

There are minor abrasions and losses to the stone throughout. These abrasions appear to be of the period, not recent. Furthermore, the abrasions are stable and not flakeing. There are not any noticeable signs of cracks to the stone.

Please consult additional images for more information about specific losses.

Dimensions are approximately 26 cm wide, 69 cm high and 19 cm deep.
