SIGNED KAGAWA, MEIJI PERIOD, LATE 19TH CENTURY
Lacquer and natural wood panel, intricately carved and inlaid with bone. A bird edging its way down a branch to access the Hachi (wasp) nest below and signed Kagawa on an inset panel.

Some scrathes and small marks to the wooden background, some small cracks to the blue lacquer frame surround, otherwise no further visible faults or damage.

Kagawa Katsuhiro (1853-1917) was born in Tokyo, where he studied a range of media including wood carving, painting under Shibata Zeshin and metalwork under Nomura Katsumori and ceramics with Kano Natsuo. His work was highly prized and examples are owned by the Tokyo National Museum and also members of the Imperial Family. He won many awards and in 1889 his work was represented at the Paris Universal Exposition.
