Beginning in 1897, Fox established a camp held every autumn at Charterisville where he and his students would spend several months painting en plein-air incorporating Impressionist practices. In the garden which sloped down to the Yarra where the light was ideal, they could paint multiple oil sketches per day, working quickly to capture the light effect. Fox placed particular emphasis on cool and warm tones, restricting the palette to no more than five colours.
Many of his autumn paintings from this period were gifted to his family.
