JEAN MARIE PHALIBOIS, CIRCA 1890
Mechanical piece under purpose made perspex dome representing a monk or hermit seated in grotto decorated with religious symbols. When music plays, the figure stands upright and then kneels at the altar in front of him. The left hand of the figure moves with two actions. The right hand has six movements enabling the figure to cross himself and pray at various times with nodding of head and movement of mouth. All performance takes place with hymns being played on a four tune musical box. At the end of the music the figure stands and then seats itself on the rock seat.
81 cm height, 56 cm width, 35 cm depth

full working condition. Costume appears to be made later. Cracks and wear consistent with age. Loss to little finger on right hand. ebonised base worn, and has most likely been re-ebonised.
