A PAIR OF FINE TWO PANEL JAPANESE SCREENS
EDO PERIOD, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

Painted on silk and evoking the spirit of the Musashino plain - marshlands which once existed to the south-west of Tokyo. Late Summer grasses and Kuma Zasa (Low Growing Bamboo) placed purposefully across the four panels and mounted on quality silk brocade with quality kanagu (metalwork fittings) featuring a tortise shell design.

Each screen has a minor perforation on the back and some very minor wear from normal use. Remounted in the second half of the 20th Century.

Screens depicting Musashino are one of the great classical subjects of Japanese art. 'Meisho-e', literally 'famous places') were immortalised by famous poems and/or literary tales.
