The Cultural Revolution of 1966-77 saw the destruction of many family photographs, and it is the loss of these precious memories that Zhang Xiaogang addresses in his work. Utilising conventions of a traditional Chinese photographer, he used dramatic lighting and flat anonymous backgrounds to idealise his subjects, creating a sense of nostalgia.
