Banksy exhibition 'Turf War', London, 2003
Private collection, Melbourne
Certificate of Authenticity provided by Banksy's authentication body Pest Control, 2019
Banksy Postcards were used to promote the Banksy website in 2001. Distributed at exhibitions and Santas Ghetto. Perforated to appear as 16 postage stamps the reverse of each marked www.banksy.co.uk.
This print was purchased at Banksy's first major exhibition, 'Turf War', held in an East London warehouse in 2003. The exhibition featured live cows, sheep, lambs and a ewe branded with Banksy's trademark spray-painted stencils. This period marked a seminal moment for Banksy, and around the same time, he also succeeded in famously hanging his own work in the Tate by smuggling the painting in under his coat. Banksy's mysterious street art first began appearing around Bristol and London's Shoreditch district during the mid 1990s. Banksy's images were appreciated by a public often in conflict with authority, all too eager for a chance to mock the establishment while raising serious political questions.
