Victor Vasarely provided some of the most distinctive images and optical effects of 20th-century art, pioneering the optical art movement. Beginning his career as a commercial graphic designer in 1930s, to his final decades finessing what he hoped would become a new universal language for art and design, Vasarely used his knowledge of mathematics and science to create his geometrical effects. He is best known for his works from the 1960s, which experiment with visual form by creating imagined, flickering effects of depth, perspective, and movement. The act of looking became integral to the works and they speak to a quintessentially modern concern with the difference between what we can see and what is really there.
