Zoë Croggon's Rosa was commissioned in an edition of 20 by Heide Museum of Modern Art for their 2017 fundraising gala. Her photo-collages and videos combine found photographs and film sequences to construct new images. In this print, she combines the human form with details of modernist architecture, a technique typical of her work. As Croggon describes: 'the femininity of the figure is a direct nod to Sunday Reed, the hands a recognition of making, tactility, and so on'. The subtle palette and geometric styling are inspired by Heide's natural and built environment, especially the 1960s Heide II house. Croggon has titled the work after the Rosa Mutabilis grown in Heide's gardens, one of Sunday's favourite flowers-as portrayed by Sidney Nolan in his famous 1945 portrait of his lover. Rosa Mutabilis alters colour over time as it blooms. Croggon sees the flower's changeability as a metaphor for how the images and subjects in her work undergo a process of transformation.
