Ivan Sagita is a highly regarded Indonesian artist both within Indonesia and throughout the Asia-Pacific, and a well-recognised figurehead of Jogja Surrealism. Born in Malang, Indonesia in 1957, Sagita lives and works in Yogyakarta, the city in which he completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in 1985. He has exhibited broadly throughout the Asia-Pacific and the USA, where he has received numerous awards for his work. This includes the Indonesian Painting Biennale (1987 & 1989), the Osaka Triennale (1996), and the Mainichi Broadcasting System Prize at the Osaka Sculpture Triennale (1998). Sagita was exhibited in the first Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane 1993, and in Freezing the Time, Gallery of Northern Territory University, Darwin 2001.

Spiritual Bridge is painted in the Jogja Surrealist Style (Jogja being a shortened name for the city Yogyakarta). Whilst sharing painterly qualities with Western Surrealism, conceptually the artists associated with the Jogja Surrealist style divert from Western Surrealism by gazing at the unreal world drawn from their immediate surroundings, rather than revelling in its creation. Sagita explores the intersection of contemporary social issues with spirituality and particularly the cultural merging of tradition with modernity.
