Lot 59

PENLEIGH BOYD (1890-1923)
(Noon, Port Hacking) 1922
oil on canvas
signed and dated lower right: Penleigh Boyd / 22 -
60 x 75cm

Estimate $25,000 - $35,000

Unsold

No holes or tears visible from canvas verso. Losses upper right and also smaller areas lower right. Some paint thinning and abrasions around the edges where work has had previous contact with frame.
No evidence as such of actual restoration to the work ie, no dark blotches, floating brush strokes, over painting or over-cleaning.

What is apparent in UV light that there is a light green (chartreuse) crystallization occurring around the edges of the painting. Mostly seen in the lower right and left hand sides, very minimal and closely located to the frame. Not visible to the naked eye, this detection is most likely old varnish which as been sustained in fragments given its close location and sheltering of the frame.
