Near Black Rock
oil on wood
unsigned
23 x 34cm
Estimate $500 - $700
In fair condition consistent with age. There are minor losses mostly around the far edge, and possible the result of a previous framing. There are areas where the paint has split, likely due to the wood and priming.
The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Prospective buyers are encouraged to inspect articles for sale at our pre-sale viewing where Leonard Joel staff are available for advice.

Important Women Artists Gallery, Melbourne (stamped verso)
Mary Meyer was a talented artist who had studied under E. Phillips Fox. On 20 January 1904 she married Dr. Felix Meyer - a great supporter of the Heidelberg and Charterisville artistic circle which included Mary.
In 1965 she held a retrospective exhibition at the Lyceum Club, of which she was an original member. With no children, she left a large estate to the University of Melbourne to endow postgraduate scholarships in literature and in obstetrics and gynaecology, both in her husband's name, and also to the Brownless medical library.
E. Phillips Fox produced a delicate charcoal study of Mary, now in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia.
