Boyd returned to Australia in 1971 having spent many years in the English landscape. He was invited to visit Shoalhaven River, on the south coast of New South Wales by an art dealer and after sketching his surroundings, began a love affair with the area. This wild landscape became one of Boyd's most enduring subjects, and he painted it for the rest of his life.
