Private collection, Melbourne
In true Antipodean fashion, Blackman regularly explored the complexity of the human condition through his paintings. By 1960, he was producing his "Suites", often comprising of several smaller panels to form a larger mural. Two Faces c.1960 encapsulates Blackman's poetic qualities through the interaction. The figures are intimate yet distant, their sorrowful eyes do not meet and there is an aching sense of isolation yet the hand placed on the shoulder with intent suggests familiarity. Blackman's use of light instills a sense of tension, a tool to portray emotion rather than the mere drama of chiaroscuro.
