"Koalas are slow moving animals, which makes them particularly vulnerable to harm from fire. At the time of producing this work, the Ministry of Environment estimates one-third of their habitat has been destroyed, with an estimated 8,000+ koala casualties. The fires are still burning, still causing major harm to wildlife. The concept of this work is "if the bush burns, the koalas do too". This melting aesthetic is one I've used for numerous environmentally messaged artworks over my career, signifying loss and decay. It is intended to be graphic, confronting and direct in its messaging, but not offensive. The work's focal subject matter depicts 3 stages of a koala pair melting, in reference to one-third of their habit already destroyed by fire. The background to the subjects contains over 8,000 individual paint stroke to help visualise the scale of loss so far." - The Artist -
