Photographer Unknown, Portrait of Edward Henty, 10.8cm x 15.1cm, published c. 1860, in the collection of the State Library of South Australia (B 3071)
Edward Henty, "The Pioneer", was known as the founder of Victorian settlement. Edward headed to Australia with his brothers and father, Thomas Henty, and eventually settled in Van Diemen's Land. The aim that they had before them was to breed sheep and produce wool on a large scale, and so the decision was made to seek wider land on the southern edge of the continent. Edward made his way to Portland Bay, Victoria.
Sheep were fetched across from Tasmania, pastures occupied, houses erected, land cultivated. At the time of his death Edward and Anna Henty owned upwards of 20,000 acres, with a large area of land under crop. The Henty family legacy is strongly interwoven in the history of Tasmania and Victoria specifically.
