Dorothy Berry is an established artist who approaches her practice with great passion. Her keen interest in animals is employed symbolically—she has developed a complex set of signs to construct personal narratives and significance. Her 2015 artwork Not titled (parrot) is an excellent example of her work. On the one hand, it's a colourful bird, yet it's also indicative of her self-portraits, so there is possibly an autobiographical element you can read into this work. Berry has worked at Arts Project since 1985 and is the oldest artist working in the studio. She has presented four solo exhibitions in Melbourne including her 2019 retrospective Dorothy Berry–Bird on a Wire and has been featured in numerous significant group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her work is held in the MADmusée in Belgium, National Gallery of Australia and National Gallery of Victoria as well as private collections worldwide.
