Julian Martin's pastel drawings are characterised by their rich, velvety surfaces and abstracted forms. Methodical in his approach, Martin carefully selects and works from photographic references or arranged still-life, deconstructing, distilling and abstracting the imagery to create highly refined and considered compositions. The portrait Not titled elegantly demonstrates Martin's continuous reinterpretation of, and response to, form. Julian Martin has worked in the Arts Project studio since 1988. He has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally at Australian Galleries (1995), The Armory Show and Outsider Art Fair (Fleisher/Ollman Booth, New York), Spring 1883, Museum of New and Old Art. His work is in numerous collections including City of Melbourne, Monash University Museum of Art and National Gallery of Victoria (as gifted by Stuart Purves). Julian Martin is currently represented by Fleisher/Ollman, Philadelphia and Arts Project Australia, Melbourne.
