Samraing Chea is an emerging artist who works meticulously with colour and grey lead pencil on paper. Containing humorous and startling social commentary, his practice demonstrates an uncanny ability to extract the irony and idiosyncrasies of his subject. His signature line of text at the bottom of each drawing describes his inspiration or adds a witty thought, leaving the viewer to decode the scene. At the Observatory... presents as obscure narrative in comic-like form, where we follow Ainsling from a state of sleep on the steps of the observatory to the pet shop way of piggyback. Chea has worked at Arts Project since 2011 and has exhibited at Spring 1883 and Melbourne Art Fair. He held his first solo show at Reading Room in 2018.
