John Bates is a painter whose striking, delineated compositions are characterised by flat planes of vivid colour. Through the use of a minimal palette emphasising the two-dimensional surface, the works play with ordinary perceptions of landscape. Bates' process involves creating a dense surface by repeated application of colour, and in the piece presented for auction, the opaque sections are packed together to create an open expanse of land and sky, the house nestled behind the hill appearing as if lit by the sun. John Bates has worked at Arts Project Australia since 1990 and has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. His work is held by the National Gallery of Victoria, Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery and in private collections.
