MASHIKO, SHOWA PERIOD (1926-1989), CIRCA 1950s
The faceted baluster-form vase decorated in 'nagashi-yu/nagashi-kake' technique (glazes poured on creating uneven flowing decorative patterns) with bold splashes of celadon, 'kuro-yu' (black iron glaze) and 'nuka-yu' (rice-husk glaze) against a 'kaki-yu' (persimmon glaze) ground. With a rare iron black signature for Totaro on the base, and accompanied by a tomobako (original signed wooden box). Tomobako lid inscription reading "kaki-yu nishaku nagashi mentori kabin Mashiko mingama Totaro" with Totaro's red seal.

Sakuma Totaro was one of the core potters of the Mingei (folk art) movement, from an old potting lineage in Mashiko. He was a personal friend of Hamada Shoji, and considered an exemplary potter of the Mingei movement.
