In 1835 Martens began sketching around the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. He was particularly inspired by the unfamiliar landscape with lush flora. It is thought that Martens paid one of the locals to ferry him between the two islands. Many of the sketches he produced on this trip progressed into later watercolours and and oil painting.
