This artwork exemplifies Monica Burns' ability to convey conflicting emotions in one piece, the vampirish figure emerging from the darkness, joyful yet sinister.
Monica Burns is a mid-career figurative painter who works on an intimate scale with pencil, ink, watercolour paint and gouache on paper. Drawing inspiration from musicals, theatre brochures, landscapes and people, she creates complex compositions of frenetic lines that connect and overlap, resulting in dark yet beautiful artworks.
Burns has worked in the studio at Arts Project Australia since 1996 and presented her first solo exhibition in 1999. She has been included in numerous group exhibitions including at Linden New Art and l'Orangerie du Luxembourg, Paris. Her work is held in national and international?private and corporate collections.
