The Nutcracker is an outstanding example of Emily Dober's commitment to the art form of dance as subject matter. The classical production is portrayed here with a soft elegance. It appears to capture a complex moment in the narrative of the production with figures placed in various positions on the 'stage'.
Emily Dober is a painter and illustrator whose figurative works focus on the feminine form as portrayed in magazines and advertisements. Working from a gently drawn pencil or ink outline, her strong sense of composition and carefully considered layers of colour give the works a distinctive, highly personalised style. One of her main concerns is analysing the movements and gestures of the female body in dance. While these works appear as abstract studies, they are also spontaneous, carefree and joyous.
Dober has worked at Arts Project Australia since 2010 and held her first solo exhibition in 2017. She has exhibited nationally and internationally with her works held in private collections throughout Australia.
