lgernon, Graves (1905), The Royal Academy of Arts; A Complete Dictionary of Contributors and Their Work From its Foundation in 1769 to 1904: Vol II, Henry Graves and Co. Ltd : George Bell and Sons, p 165

Eldest son and pupil of Henry Corbould, a well-known landscape and miniature painter, Edward Henry Corbould trained under Henry Sass before studying at the Royal Academy of Arts London.
In 1837, he became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. Most notably, Corbould was appointed drawing master to the Royal Family, in particular, to the children of Queen Victoria from 1851 to 1872. This particular painting is often referred to in literature as one of his early exhibited works recorded. The theme of the Canterbury Pilgrims was a subject Corbould returned to many times throughout his career.
