Lot 4030

A PATINATED PLASTER BUST OF THE YOUNG LOUIS XVI
EARLY 20TH CENTURY, LEONARD JOEL LOCAL DELIVERY SIZE: SMALL

Realistically modelled with Order and sash, raised on a terracotta socle. Indistinct stamp to the underside of the base
The Estate of Rodney Permezel.
43cm high, 25.5cm wide

Estimate $150 - $250

Sold for $180

The identification of the sitter as Louis XVI is principally by repute, based on the late vendor's own private research. Following this in good faith, Leonard Joel has previously found other comparable portraits similarly identified but none securely identified as Louis XVI. Prospective purchasers should therefore satisfy themselves of the identity of the sitter. The impressed mark to the underside of the socle is quite indistinct and has proved impossible to photograph clearly (being largely filled with glaze) but further examination reveals it to be the word VERITAS within a horizontal oval. Also upon further examination, it appears the bust is later than described in the catalogue, probably dating to the middle decades of the 20th century.
