After gaining success almost instantaneously for his unique approach and intense colour palette, in 2005, Watson came to the attention of a wider contemporary audience through his inclusion in a collaborative project at the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris producing a permanent installation at the museum. Watson was a Pitjantjatjara elder, who grew up on the edge of the Gibson Desert, living in the APY lands, which covers a large area across Western Australia, Northern Territory and South Australia. His works are energetic, vibrant and powerfully individual, resonating still within conversations about contemporary Indigenous art.
