NORTHERN WEI (386-534AD), 5TH/6TH CENTURY
A portable devotional bronze votive shrine modelled as a stele raised on a four-legged plinth, the stele depicting a Buddha seated in padmasana with one hand raised in abhaya mudra, the other in varada mudra, surrounded by a flame mandorla, and further surrounded by a larger flame mandorla, flanked by two Bodhisattvas and with a smaller buddha above. The plinth is inscribed to the front and side, roughly translating to 'Commissioned by Shi Chen, follower of the Buddha'. Together with a fine, fitted hardwood stand, and a high quality purple silk-lined Japanese wooden box.
