A JAPANESE TWO-PANEL SCREEN
BY YUGE KOHO, TAISHO PERIOD

Featuring a bold and dramatic design of an eagle atop a huge pine branch with details on the pine and the eagle in well executed relief work. Yuge Koho was a pupil of the famous painter Domoto Insho, who won the Imperial Art Academy Prize in 1925, and received an Imperial Order of Cultural Merit in 1965. Koho was regarded as an eccentric painter working in both Western and Japanese styles.

A few minor losses to the lacquer finish of the frame; a small restored tear approximately 3cm long in the upper centre of the left hand panel; a small restored area approximately 2.5 x 1cm to the left hand panel at the left border; a small dent in the upper centre of the left hand panel; a small area of cracking to the raised white gofun pigment to the bird's wing; small area of buckling to the silk in the lower right hand corner of the right hand panel; a few very minor areas of watermarking to the lower right hand area of the right hand panel; a few tears to the paper backing at the reverse of the screen.
