Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was a Swedish designer and architect who was self-taught, his designs experimented with curves and height and were often driven by function. He developed his own technique for bending wood which became a feature in many of his most notable designs. Model 36 was the first chair he designed purely for relaxation and was first advertised in 1937.
