The original painting is held in the Louvre, Paris. Edward Dechaux was a New York City business active in the 1830s, he was known as a "colour man" who prepared canvases for artists through a time-consuming process of sizing, adding layers of a solid colour ground, and then drying thoroughly, a process that saved painters much time and effort.
