A JAPANESE LACQUER SUZURIBAKO
EDO PERIOD (1603-1868), 18TH CENTURY

Decorated to the cover with a monkey beneath a chestnut tree beside a river, and the interior an island against a nashiji ground, fitted with a fine gilt-copper chestnut-form suiteki (water dropper) and a later inkstone.
Height 23.8cm, Width 20.7cm

Cover: raised sections of gold lacquer worn on leaves of tree and edges and corners, two pits to the lacquer background, stains and surface marks, very fine crack on inside and a scratch and wear

Base: extensively scratched to underside, worn to corners and section of damage to lacquer on one edge, interior is worn and section of frame for ink stone lacking, ink stone has chips and section missing to underside also section missing to edge
