Private collection, Melbourne

After spending his formative years in dreary Yorkshire UK, it was no surprise that upon arrival in California, Hockney was drawn to the bold colours and everyday luxury of pool life. This is where Hockney found his most desired and talked about subject, his fascination with the backyard pool.
On a trip through New York, Hockney paid a visit to friend and collaborator Kenneth Tyler. In his studio, they were experimenting with a medium that Hockney had never been exposed to, the paper pulp process. This involved dyeing wet pulped rags, which were fully pressed and dried. During this process there were opportunities for the artist to manipulate the application of colour at all stages. The result was a cross between paper-making, printmaking and painting. Hockney found this new technique creatively liberating, realising that this process could offer many variations on one theme, creating the Paper Pools series.
Between 1978 and 1980, Hockney had created a body of works using the paper pulp technique. Embodying these works into a book, 'Pool Made with Paper and Blue ink for Book / Paper Pools'. Hockney published 11 prints that alternated between combinations of blue and green colour lithographic washes while employing various methods aimed at describing water. Paper Pools was inspired by the publication featuring an orange springboard hovering above a glistening body of water, the most vibrant and colourful print from the series.
