Born in Bordeaux in 1889, Jean-Gabriel Domergue exhibited artistic talent from a young age with his landscape paintings winning him awards at French and Italian Salons from the age of 17. It wasn't until the 1920s that his focus decidedly shifted to "la Parisienne" – the slender, casual, elegant and effervescent women of fashionable society. Throughout the course of his career he would go on to paint approximately 3,000 portraits of actresses, young dancers, members of the aristocracy and socialites. A modern Fragonard or Watteau, Domergue played an essential role in the evolution of fashion, not only designing for the most famous couturiers, including Paul Poiret and Henry Marque, but also establishing with his art the standard for beauty in the mid-20th century.
This work has been reframed in a Cadres E. Bouche frame with original framing label verso.
Noé Willer has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.
