John Paul Cooper (1869-1933) was a second-generation artist of the Arts and Craft Movement and is credited with reviving the lost art of shagreen at the end of the 19th century. This cylindrical box is typical of Cooper's shagreen work and during his lifetime such boxes were a popular commodity.
