Lot 112

AN UNUSUAL ROYAL DOULTON POTTERY EWER
BY FLORENCE E. BARLOW, FIRST QUARTER 20TH CENTURY

Of large proportions, the outline decorated with a band of various Art Nouveau scrolls to the neck and foot, the central band decorated with pate sur pate hens in grasslands on a matted ground, incised to underside of base 'FEB' and numbered 878.
41.5cm high, 23cm wide including handle

Estimate $800 - $1,000

Sold for $2,600

In excellent condition throughout consistent with age and handling. At the uppermost register, there is above and below the broad ridge a series of fine horizontal cracks beneath the glaze, evidently shrinkage cracks in the clay body that occurred before or during firing. In the main register, there are some pale (dried liquid?) stains and some ingrained dirt to the finely textured ground, and surface dirt elsewhere. There are specks of modern cream coloured paint scattered on the surface, especially to one side of the foot, but these are readily removed with a fingernail, with no ill effect. The interior is dirty.
