Lot 50

AFTER THEODOOR ROMBOUTS (Flemish, 1597-1637), second half 19th century
'The Gamblers'
Oil on canvas
Housed in decorative gilded frame, unsigned.
The frame 146cm x 184.5cm

Estimate $2,000 - $4,000

Sold for $2,400

For the most part the painting presents well in previously restored condition excepting an unrestored oval tear affecting an area of approximately 3 x 4cm to the left of the head of the left-most figure. There are a number of old patches to the reverse side of the canvas. In most cases the restoration of the painted surface associated with these repairs is not apparent at normal viewing but in the case of the largest patch to the reverse, there is visible from the front some unevenness in the canvas (but not in the paint itself, which is well blended).

This report has been prepared from visual inspection under normal light and through a clear acrylic sheet used as 'glazing' in the frame; it is not presently possible to inspect the work under UV light.

The antique frame is in good condition, excepting typical bumps and small losses, but has been repainted gold.

The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact.
