Lot 25
CIRCA 1800
Each with an open back centered on a baluster form splat, the drop-in seat above a shaped seat rail raised on cabriole supports, inlaid throughout with classical designs of birds, vases, flowers and foliage.
106.5cm high, 48cm wide, 40cm deep
Estimate $800 - $1,200
Both chairs show themselves to have been well used; they are well patinated and have various small nicks, minor repairs, and scuffs throughout, including small losses to the decorative veneers and inlay.
The joints of one chair are a little loose, particularly its front joints connecting the seat rails and legs; movement in these joints has caused splits in the seat rails and related losses in veneer and inlay; the joints of the other chair are firm but past movement in these has caused some minor cracking to veneers covering the joints.
Both chairs have old, evidently dormant worm holes scattered throughout.
The fabric covering the drop-in seats is dirty and little worn and their padding is sagging.
