Lot 111

A MID VICTORIAN OAK EGYPTIAN THEMED PARTNER'S DESK
CIRCA 1860

The leather-lined rectangular top of inverted breakfront outline on the long sides, the receding concave frieze with a central drawer on the principal sides flanked by winged sun motifs carved in relief above the pedestals, the pedestals with drawers on the long sides and false drawer fronts on the return sides
78cm high, 214cm wide, 154cm deep

Estimate $2,000 - $3,000

Sold for $1,600

Generally in very good condition with only very light wear, subject to the following further points. There are scattered scuffs and scratches to the leather to the top, which is otherwise in very good condition. All parts of the desk are of uniform honey colour with the exception of the return side of one pedestal which has some grey-black staining caught in the grain of the wood. There is a gap of about 3cm between the friezes of the two sections of the top, the reason for which is not clear but it does appear that there may have been some early adjustment to the abutting edges of the top sections. Of the two central frieze drawers, only one has ever had a lock, a Bramah-type lock for which no key is present; the bolt of this lock has been taped down to be flush with the top of the drawer front, evidently to prevent it springing up. Each of the pedestals has a large, apparently original caster to the centre of its underside, creating a clearance of about 4cm between the lower edge of the pedestal plinth and the floor (which is included within the 78cm given as the height of the desk). The weight on these castors has been relieved by the relatively recent fixing of two pine battens to the underside of each pedestal.
