Lot 118

A PAIR OF ENGLISH GLAZED EARTHENWARE URNS
FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY

Of campana form, each painted with floral reserves on a cobalt blue ground with gilt highlights, each with a pierced cover with flamiform finial enclosing an inner cover
33.5cm high

Estimate $700 - $900

Sold for $900

The urns are earthenware, not porcelain as previously described.

Inspection under UV light reveals that both urns and pierced outer covers have been repaired. On one urn this appears to be confined to a clean reattachment of the body to the foot at the base of the body. The other urn has had the whole of its foot repaired, put back together from two or more pieces, and then reattached to the body with a join at the narrowest part of the foot stem. The formerly hollow centre of its foot stem has largely been filled. This urn also has two areas of restoration to its rim. Both pierced covers have several repairs. The inner covers appear to be in original condition (excepting wear to their gilding) but one has a firing crack to the underside of one edge.

The gilding is worn to the edges, high points, and handles of the urns and to all covers, but their decoration is otherwise in good condition, excepting variations over repairs.
