EDO/MEIJI PERIOD
Classic Rinpa theme of the mythological mountain in the fortunate islands of paradise. Colours on silk depicting crashing waves, lush green mountains and a lone crane awaiting the arrival of two others whilst the sun disappears. Mounted on traditional brocade and signature and seal of Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828).

Sakai Hoitsu was born in Edo. He was the second son of the Lord of Himeji Castle in Harima Province. The Rinpa School's popularity was revived in the early nineteenth century, largely due to his efforts and he succeeded in re-establishing the school during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
