Of spherical form in Shigaraki stoneware, part covered in flying ash glaze, displaying a rich and warm orange colour in the unglazed areas. Together with its tomobako (original signed Japanese wooden box).

Otani Shiro began his studies at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts under Kiyomizu Rokubei VI, Shohu Eiichi and Uchida Kunio. In 1973 he moved to Kinose Dairino in Shigaraki to set up his own kiln and where he studied under Shimizu Uichi a ‘living national treasure.' In 1990 Otani was designated as an intangible cultural asset of Shigaraki province.
